Frequently Asked Questions

This information is provided to assist you with several of the more common questions on procedures your dentist may perform. If you have questions that are not shown here, please contact us.

Q. What can be done about a chipped tooth or large gaps between teeth?

A. One of the ways is bonding. Bonding is a simple and painless procedure that transforms chipped or widely spaced teeth into a beautiful smile. We will be happy to answer any questions regarding cosmetic procedures. Just set up an appointment for a consultation.

Q. I've heard about teeth bleaching from my friends. Does it make my teeth white permanently?

A. Teeth bleaching is for teeth that have become discolored. Teeth bleaching can be very effective in bringing back a brighter, whiter smile. Teeth bleaching does not work on all stains and re-bleaching may be necessary in some cases. Ask us for more details.

Q. What are veneers?

A. Veneers are the "hottest" technique in dentistry today for correcting chips and gaps in teeth. Special material is adhered to the front of the tooth. Ask for more details.

Q. Does my insurance cover procedures such as check-ups, cosmetic work, orthodontics, etc.?

A. Dental coverage varies but most policies cover regular check-ups, etc. We will work with your insurance company so that you will get the maximum benefits you are entitled to. For those procedures that may not be covered, inquire about our financing policy.

Q. When will I know if my children need braces?

A. During the process of regular check-ups we will be monitoring the growth progress of your children's teeth. Together we will determine whether braces will be needed. Braces are not only important for proper teeth and bite development they also can enhance the look and structure of your child's face. Braces correct dental problems and can have a significant and very positive impact on your child's well being.

Q. Do adults ever need braces?

A. Yes, more often than you probably realize. And its never too late to correct old problems that were not addressed as children or newer dental problems that may have developed over many years. There are braces today that are virtually invisible.

Q. What age should my children start brushing, and when should they come in for their first visit?

A. As soon as they have their first "baby" tooth is when they should begin cleaning. Most toddlers will need to have an adult brush their teeth for them. Proper care of the "baby" teeth will help ensure straighter and stronger permanent teeth. We recommend a first visit at age two or three to ensure the best possible dental development. Plus, a quick and simple visit can be fun and will leave the child with a positive image of the dental office.

Q. What kind of anesthetics do you use?

A. All modern dental practices offer a variety of anesthetics to make your visit as comfortable as possible. We will be happy to discuss your anesthetic options and determine the proper anesthetic for you.

Q. Do I need to floss? If yes, how often?

A. Yes, brushing alone will not remove food particles between teeth. Flossing should be performed at least once a day.

Q. What is periodontal disease?

A. Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is the major cause of tooth loss in adults. It is caused by plaque irritating the gums and can lead to serious damage. Ask us about the preventative techniques and treatment of periodontal disease.

Q. If my water is fluoridated, why should I have to see a dentist?

A. True, fluoridated water helps prevent tooth decay but there are many other potential problems that fluoridated water will not correct. Regular check-ups are important for spotting such things as gum disease. Plus, teeth cleaning by the dentist will brighten your smile!
